Key Facts
Meet Captain Hudner, the Hero Pilot!
Imagine a super brave pilot named Thomas J. Hudner Jr.! He was a captain in the Navy, which is like being the boss of a big ship that flies planes. He flew a cool airplane called an F4U Corsair, which looked a bit like a bent-wing bird. Captain Hudner was born a long, long time ago in a town called Fall River, Massachusetts. He loved flying and helping others, especially his friends.
A Snowy Rescue Mission!
One super cold day, Captain Hudner and his friend, Ensign Jesse L. Brown, were flying their planes. Suddenly, Ensign Brown's plane was hit and crashed in a snowy, icy place called the Chosin Reservoir.
Captain Hudner saw his friend was in trouble. Even though it was freezing and dangerous, he flew his own plane right down to the ground next to his friend's crashed plane. He wanted to pull him out!
Trying to Save a Friend
Captain Hudner tried his very best to help Ensign Brown. He landed his plane right on the snowy mountain, which was super tricky! It was so cold, like the coldest winter day you can imagine, and everything was covered in snow.
He wanted to get his friend to safety. But sadly, Ensign Brown was too hurt. Captain Hudner had to leave him there because it was getting dark and a helicopter couldn't land safely.
A Ship Named After a Hero!
Even though he couldn't save his friend that day, Captain Hudner was a true hero for trying so hard. He kept being a pilot and served in the Navy for many years. Because he was so brave and caring, the United States Navy named a big, powerful ship after him! It's called the USS Thomas Hudner. This ship is like a floating home for sailors and helps protect the country.
