Teocalli

Teocalli means 'God-house' in an old language called Nahuatl. These weren't like houses for people, but super tall, stepped buildings made of stone. At the very top, there was a special temple where important and exciting religious ceremonies took place. Think of them as giant platforms reaching for the sky, built for gods to be closer to the people!

These amazing structures were built a long, long time ago in a place called Mesoamerica, which is like ancient Mexico. People built them with lots of stone, stacking it up layer by layer, like building with giant LEGOs. The most famous one, the Great Temple, was right next to a big city square, like the main playground in Mexico City today!

Teocalli were super important because they were the main places for big religious celebrations. Imagine the most important day of the year at your school, but way, way bigger and happening on top of a giant stone pyramid! People believed these ceremonies helped keep the world in balance and made sure good things happened, like healthy crops.

There's a famous painting that shows a teocalli. It's called 'The Storming of Teocalli by Cortez and his Troops.' This painting shows a dramatic moment from history when Spanish soldiers were near one of these temples. It helps us imagine what these impressive buildings looked like and the big events that happened around them.
