Key Facts
Meet the Mighty Tarbela Dam!
Tarbela Dam is like a super-duper big bathtub for the Indus River in Pakistan. It's made of earth and rocks, and it's so enormous it's the biggest of its kind in the whole world! It stands 143 meters tall, which is taller than 40 school buses stacked on top of each other. Behind it, a giant lake called Tarbela Lake spreads out, covering an area as big as many playgrounds put together!
Why This Giant Wall Was Built!
Long ago, people realized the Indus River could be tricky. Sometimes it flooded too much, and other times there wasn't enough water for farms. So, they built Tarbela Dam!
It's like a giant water keeper. During the rainy season, when the river is full of water, the dam holds it back in the lake. Then, when it's dry, they let the water out slowly to help farmers grow their crops and to make electricity!
Making Power from Water!
Did you know water can make electricity? Tarbela Dam has special machines called turbines. When the water rushes out of the dam, it spins these turbines super fast. This spinning creates electricity that lights up homes and powers schools and hospitals! It's a clean way to get energy, using the power of the moving river.
A Lake Bigger Than You Can Imagine!
The lake behind Tarbela Dam is called Tarbela Lake. It's so big, it covers about 250 square kilometers! That's a lot of water stored up. This water is super important. It helps control floods so towns don't get washed away, and it makes sure there's enough water for drinking and for growing yummy food all year round.
