Sumptuary law

Imagine a rule that says only kings and queens can wear purple, or only rich people can eat fancy cakes. That's kind of what a sumptuary law was! These were old rules that told people what they could and couldn't buy or wear.

They were like a fashion police for the whole country, deciding who got to look fancy and who had to keep it simple. It was all about making sure everyone knew their place in society.
