Where Does Sweetness Grow?

Imagine plants like giant candy factories! Sucrose is a special sugar made naturally inside plants. It's the main ingredient that makes white sugar taste so sweet. This sugar is like a tiny building block, made from two even smaller pieces called glucose and fructose. It's found in many plants, but we get most of our table sugar from two special ones: sugarcane and sugar beet.

From Plant to Your Plate!

Getting sugar to your kitchen is a big adventure! Sugarcane loves warm, sunny places, so it grows in tropical areas. Farmers crush the tall sugarcane stalks to get a sugary juice. Then, this juice is sent to special factories to be cleaned and turned into sparkly white sugar crystals. Sugar beets grow in cooler places. Their factories are often close by, and they turn the beets into sugar too!

Making Sugar Sparkle!

The sugar factories are like super-clean kitchens! First, they wash the raw sugar crystals. Then, they dissolve them in water to make a syrupy liquid.

This syrup is filtered to remove any yucky bits and colored stuff. Next, they boil the syrup in a special machine that uses less pressure, making it extra concentrated. Finally, the syrup cools and turns into the pure, clear, sweet sucrose crystals we know and love!

Sugar's Sweet Job!

Sucrose is a star ingredient in so many foods! It's added to cookies, cakes, ice cream, and even some drinks to make them taste delicious. In 2017, people around the world made a HUGE amount of sugar โ€“ about 185 million tons! That's like filling up more than 37 million school buses with sugar! It's amazing how plants can create something so sweet that brings so much joy.
