SHIPWRECK: MYSTERY - SS Edmund Fitzgerald

Key Facts
Meet the Mighty Edmund Fitzgerald!
The SS Edmund Fitzgerald was a super-duper big ship, like a floating skyscraper on the water! When it was built, it was the biggest ship on all the Great Lakes. It was a 'freighter,' which means its job was to carry heavy stuff, like iron ore, from one place to another across the lakes. It was a real workhorse, always busy carrying its cargo!
A Captain Who Loved Music!
The captain of the Edmund Fitzgerald, Captain Peter Pulcer, was pretty cool. He liked to play music over the ship's speakers so everyone could hear it, especially when sailing through busy rivers. He would even talk to people watching the ship at the locks, telling them all about it. People loved watching this giant ship and listening to its music!
Caught in a Giant Storm!
One day, the Edmund Fitzgerald was sailing on Lake Superior, which is the biggest and deepest of the Great Lakes. Suddenly, a super strong storm hit! The waves got as high as a three-story building, and the wind howled like a monster. The ship was in big trouble, but the captain said they were okay, just moments before it sank.
A Mystery on the Lake
Sadly, the Edmund Fitzgerald sank very fast in the stormy water. All 29 sailors on board were lost, and the ship broke into two big pieces. Nobody knows exactly why it sank, but it's a famous story that reminds us how powerful storms on the Great Lakes can be. A song was even written about it!
