Key Facts
Meet the Spartocids!
Once upon a time, in a land called the Bosporus Kingdom, there was a special family called the Spartocids. They were like the kings and queens of this kingdom for a very, very long time, from about 438 BC to 108 BC. That's longer than your grandparents' grandparents have been alive!
They took over from another family and ruled for many, many years. Their kingdom was a busy place with lots of people and trade.
How They Became Rulers
The Spartocid family didn't start out as rulers. First, another family called the Archaeanactids was in charge. But then, a man named Spartokos I decided he wanted to be king. In 438 BC, he took over the kingdom, and that's how the Spartocid dynasty began! His family kept ruling after him, passing the crown down through generations. It was like a relay race, but with kingdoms instead of batons.
A Famous King and His Adventures
One of the most famous Spartocid rulers was King Leukon I. He was super good at being king! He made the kingdom bigger and stronger, like adding extra rooms to your house. He also had to be brave and fight off enemies called the Scythians. King Leukon I ruled for a very long time, about 40 years, which is a really long time for a king to be in charge!
The End of Their Reign
Even though the Spartocids ruled for a long time, their kingdom eventually came to an end. In 108 BC, a group of people called the Scythians came and took over the kingdom. It was like a new team winning a big game and taking the trophy. After that, other families ruled the Bosporus Kingdom. But the Spartocids are remembered for their long rule and the kingdom they built.
