Key Facts
A Super Old Church!
Southwark Cathedral is a very, very old church in London, England. It's been a special place for people to pray for more than 1,000 years! That's even older than your grandparents' grandparents! It sits right by the River Thames, a big river that flows through London. It's so old that it has seen knights, kings, and queens walk by.
From Monks to Cathedrals
For a long time, this church was part of a special group of buildings called a priory, where monks lived and prayed. They called it Southwark Priory. Later, after the monks left, it became a regular church called St Saviour's.
Then, in 1905, it became a cathedral, which is like the main church for a whole area called a diocese. It's like going from being a regular school to being the principal's office for all the schools in town!
Built Like a Giant Puzzle
The main part of the church you see today was built a long, long time ago, between the years 1220 and 1420. That's over 600 years ago! It's built in a style called Gothic, which means it has tall, pointy windows and arches that reach up to the sky. Imagine building something that tall and grand without any modern machines! It's like building a LEGO castle that's as tall as a house.
Why It's So Special
Southwark Cathedral is special because it's been a place of worship for so many centuries. It's seen so much history happen in London. It's also the 'mother church' for its area, meaning other churches look up to it. It's a place where important ceremonies happen and where people can find peace and quiet, even in a busy city.
