Welcome to Skara Brae!

Skara Brae is like a super old village made of stone, found in Scotland. It has ten houses all snuggled together. These houses are made of flat stones, like giant LEGO bricks! Inside, they had stone beds, shelves, and even a fireplace to keep warm. It’s like stepping back in time to see how people lived a super, super long time ago.

A Home Built by Builders!

People lived in Skara Brae about 5,000 years ago! That’s way, way before your grandparents or even their grandparents were born. The houses were built into hills, like cozy burrows, which helped keep them warm. They even had a special way to get rid of yucky stuff, with drains that led out to the sea. It was pretty clever for so long ago!

Older Than Famous Stuff!

Guess what? Skara Brae is even older than the famous pyramids in Egypt and Stonehenge in England! It’s like finding a toy that’s older than your parents' oldest toys. Because it was hidden and protected by the earth, it’s still in amazing shape. It’s called the ‘Scottish Pompeii’ because it’s so well-preserved, like a snapshot of the past.

A Stormy Surprise!

Nobody knew Skara Brae was there until a big storm in 1850 blew away the sand and dirt covering it. Imagine a giant wave washing away sand at the beach and finding a hidden treasure! Now, scientists and helpers take care of Skara Brae to make sure it stays safe for everyone to visit and learn from.
