Key Facts
Meet the Snow Mountains!
The Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta is a super special mountain range in Colombia, South America. It's like a giant, lonely island of mountains because it's all by itself, not connected to other big mountains like the Andes. It's so tall that its tops are covered in snow, even though it's near warm, sunny beaches!
This makes it the highest mountain range right by the sea in the whole world, which is pretty amazing.
Taller Than a Skyscraper!
These mountains are incredibly tall! The highest peaks are about 5,700 meters (that's almost 19,000 feet!) high. To give you an idea, that's way, way taller than the tallest buildings in a city, and even taller than a stack of 100 school buses! It's so high that it's like reaching for the stars. From the top, you can see for miles and miles.
A River Factory!
Even though the mountains are rocky and snowy, they are super important for giving water to the land around them. The Sierra Nevada is like a giant water factory, with 36 different rivers starting from its snowy peaks and flowing down to the sea. These rivers bring fresh water to plants, animals, and people who live nearby, making the land green and alive.
Home to Amazing Creatures!
This special place is home to many unique plants and animals that you can't find anywhere else. Because the mountains are so tall and have different levels of height, there are many different kinds of homes for them. From the snowy tops to the green forests lower down, it's a paradise for nature lovers. It’s a place where nature’s magic really shines!
