What Was the Leningrad Siege?

Imagine a giant hug that squeezes a whole city! That's kind of what the Siege of Leningrad was like. From 1941 to 1944, bad guys called the Axis powers surrounded the city of Leningrad. They stopped all the food and supplies from getting in. It was like trying to play a game but someone took away all your toys and snacks! The city was trapped for a super long time, almost three whole years!

When the Food Ran Out!

The people in Leningrad were very brave. But it got really hard when the food ran out. During the winter of 1941-1942, it was so cold and there was almost no food. Many people got very, very hungry and sick. It was like trying to go to school without breakfast, lunch, or dinner for months! But the people helped each other and tried their best to survive.

The Amazing Road of Life!

How did anyone get food or help? There was a super special way! When a big lake called Lake Ladoga froze over in the winter, people built a road right on the ice! They called it the 'Road of Life'. Trucks would drive across the ice, bringing food and medicine. It was like a secret tunnel made of ice, but it was super dangerous because the bad guys could see it!

Finally, Freedom!

After 872 long days, the people of Leningrad were finally free! The Soviet army fought hard to break the squeeze. Imagine finally being able to run outside and play after being stuck inside for years! The city was very sad and damaged, but the people were strong and rebuilt their home. They never let the bad guys win!
