Shatsky Rise

Far, far away in the big Pacific Ocean, east of Japan, lies a secret place called Shatsky Rise. It's not just one mountain, but a whole underwater land made of giant volcanoes! Think of it like a huge, bumpy playground at the bottom of the ocean. It’s one of the biggest of these underwater mountain lands on our whole planet, like a hidden treasure chest of rocks and lava.

A super long time ago, even before dinosaurs, the Earth’s crust was moving and bubbling. Hot, melted rock, called magma, pushed up from deep inside the Earth. This magma cooled and hardened, building up huge piles of rock.

Over millions and millions of years, these piles grew into the massive volcanoes that make up Shatsky Rise. It’s like building with giant LEGO bricks, but made of fiery rock from inside our planet!

One of the volcanoes in Shatsky Rise is called Tamu Massif. Scientists think it might be the BIGGEST volcano ever found on Earth! It’s so enormous that it covers an area bigger than many countries combined. If you could see it, it would stretch out for miles and miles, like a giant sleeping dragon under the waves.
