Key Facts
Where Do These Water Birds Hang Out?
Sea ducks are like ocean explorers! They live all around the chilly waters of the Northern Hemisphere, which is the top half of our planet. Imagine them splashing in the seas near places like Canada, Russia, and even the very top of Europe. They love coastlines, bays, and sometimes even big lakes that are close to the sea. These places have lots of yummy food for them!
What's for Dinner? A Sea Duck Buffet!
Sea ducks are super picky eaters, but in a good way! Many of them love to eat shellfish, like clams and mussels. They have strong bills that help them pry open shells. Some sea ducks are also great at diving deep to catch fish or tiny shrimp. They can hold their breath for a long time, like a human holding their breath underwater for a whole minute! That's a long time to look for snacks.
Cool Tricks of the Sea Duck Trade!
Did you know some sea ducks have a special trick? They can drink saltwater! Their bodies have a special way to get rid of the extra salt, so they don't get thirsty like we would. They also have amazing feathers that keep them warm even in freezing water. These feathers trap air, like a cozy blanket, helping them stay toasty while they swim and dive.
Meet the Duck Family!
There are many different kinds of sea ducks, and they all look unique! Some, like the Common Eider, are big and fluffy, while others, like the Long-tailed Duck, are smaller and have long tail feathers. They often gather in big groups, called flocks, especially when they are migrating or looking for food. Seeing a big flock of sea ducks is a spectacular sight!
