Scissors

Imagine two strong arms that can open and close to slice through things. That's what scissors are like! They have two sharp blades that slide past each other. When you squeeze the handles, the blades come together and cut. They are usually small enough to fit in your hand, but they are super powerful. You can find them in kitchens, classrooms, and even in your craft box!

Long, long ago, people didn't have scissors like we do. They used sharp rocks or knives to cut things. The first scissors that looked a bit like ours were invented over 3,000 years ago in ancient Egypt! They were made of bronze and were much bigger than today's scissors. Over time, people made them smaller and better, and now we have all sorts of scissors for different jobs.

Scissors are super important because they help us make so many things! We use them to cut paper for drawings and crafts, to open packages, and to trim our hair. Chefs use them to cut herbs and food. Gardeners use them to trim plants. Without scissors, many of the things we do every day would be much, much harder!

It's all about how the blades work together! Each blade has a sharp edge. When you push the handles, the blades move past each other, like a tiny, controlled earthquake for paper.
