Key Facts
What Was This 'Protection Squad'?
The Schutzstaffel, or SS, was a group that started small, like a few friends guarding a meeting. They were like the special security team for a big political club called the Nazi Party. Over time, this group got bigger and more powerful, and they were known for being very strict and scary. They wore special uniforms and had a symbol that looked like two lightning bolts.
Where Did They Come From?
This group began in Germany a long, long time ago, even before your parents were born! It started with just a few volunteers who wanted to keep their leaders safe during meetings. Then, a man named Heinrich Himmler joined and helped it grow. It became a really big and important part of the Nazi Party, and they were in charge of many things across Germany and other countries too.
What Made Them So Powerful?
The SS had different jobs. Some members were like police, making sure everyone followed the rules the Nazi Party wanted. Others were like soldiers, fighting in wars. There was even a part that ran scary places called camps. They were very good at watching people and making sure no one spoke out against the Nazi leaders. This made them a very feared group.
A Sad Story of Bad Actions
Sadly, the SS was involved in terrible things. They were responsible for hurting and killing millions of innocent people, especially Jewish people, during a dark time called the Holocaust. They also used people as slave workers. Because of these awful actions, after the war ended, the SS was declared a criminal group by judges from around the world.
