Salafi

Salafis are a group of Muslims who want to follow the ways of the very first Muslims, like the Prophet Muhammad and his friends. They believe that living like them is the best way to be a good Muslim. It's like wanting to play your favorite game exactly how your older sibling showed you the very first time!

They read the Quran and Hadith, which are like holy books and stories about the Prophet, to learn how to live.

They are a part of the Sunni branch of Islam. Think of Islam like a big tree with different branches. Salafis are on one of those branches, and they really focus on the oldest parts of the tree.

Salafis look back to a time called the 'Salaf al-Salih', which means 'pious predecessors'. This was the time of the Prophet Muhammad and the first generations of Muslims. They believe this was a perfect time, and they want to copy that lifestyle.

It's like wanting to build a LEGO castle exactly like the one you saw in a very old instruction book. They try to understand and practice their religion just as they believe those early Muslims did, without adding new ideas that came later.

This way of thinking started to become more popular a long time ago, but it became even more important in the 20th century. People wanted to go back to what they saw as the pure form of Islam.

Salafis believe that the best way to live a good life and please God is to follow the example of the Prophet Muhammad and his companions. They think that over time, some practices and ideas have been added to Islam that weren't there in the beginning. By going back to the earliest teachings, they feel they are being more authentic and true to their faith.

It’s like wanting to eat a recipe just like grandma used to make it, without any changes!

They also believe that by sticking to these old ways, they can avoid problems and confusion that might come from newer ideas. They want to make sure their understanding of Islam is pure and correct, just like they imagine it was in the very beginning.

Not all Salafis are exactly the same! While they all agree on wanting to follow the early Muslims, they might have different ideas about how to do that. Some Salafis focus a lot on studying religious texts and living a quiet life.

Others might be more interested in politics or even activism, trying to change things in the world around them. It’s like how some kids love to build with LEGOs quietly, while others like to use their LEGOs to create big, noisy action scenes!

There are also different groups within Salafism, and sometimes they don't agree with each other on certain points. But the main idea for all of them is to try and live their lives as closely as possible to how the first Muslims did.
