A Valentine's Day Surprise... Not a Nice One!

On February 14th, 1929, something very scary happened in Chicago. A group of men were waiting in a garage, maybe for a secret meeting. Suddenly, some other men, dressed like police officers, burst in!

It wasn't a friendly visit. They made the first group stand against a wall. Then, they used loud, powerful machines that shot many bullets.

It was a very dark day, not a happy Valentine's Day at all.

Who Were These Mystery Men?

The men who were attacked were part of a group called the North Side Gang. They were rivals with another group led by a famous, but not very nice, man named Al Capone. People think Al Capone's group might have wanted to stop the North Side Gang leader. But, the leader wasn't even there when the scary event happened! It's like trying to catch a ball player, but they're not on the field.

The Loudest Guns Ever!

The attackers used special guns called Thompson submachine guns. These guns made a LOT of noise and shot many bullets very fast, like a super-powered water gun but with bullets! They fired seventy bullets from these guns. They also used a shotgun. It was a very loud and frightening scene. The police found the cars the bad guys used later, but they had been burned up to hide clues.

Why We Still Talk About It

This event was so shocking that it made people think about how dangerous those loud guns were. It even helped change the rules about who could have those kinds of weapons. Even though it was a long, long time ago, stories about this day are still told in books and movies because it was such a dramatic and important moment in history.
