Key Facts
Meet 'Scarface' Al!
Al Capone was born in New York City way back in 1899. He grew up to be a very famous, and very feared, gangster in Chicago during a time called Prohibition. This was when it was against the law to make or sell alcohol, like soda pop, but for grown-ups!
Al Capone became super rich and powerful by secretly selling alcohol, even though it was illegal. He was known for his tough attitude and the scar on his face, which is why some people called him 'Scarface'.
Running a Secret Business
Al Capone was like the boss of a huge, secret business. He didn't just sell illegal drinks; he also ran gambling places and other shady operations. He had lots of people working for him, and they all followed his orders.
He was so powerful that he seemed to control a big part of Chicago! It was like he had his own secret city where he made the rules. He was very good at hiding his illegal activities from the police for a long time.
Why Was He So Famous?
Al Capone became famous because he was so successful at running his illegal empire. He was also known for being very violent when he needed to be, which scared a lot of people. One of the most shocking events was the 'St.
Valentine's Day Massacre,' where some of his rivals were killed. Even though he did many bad things, he was also seen by some as a kind of folk hero because he broke the law and became so rich and powerful. He was like a character from a movie!
The End of the Road
Even though Al Capone was very clever, he couldn't hide forever. The police and the government really wanted to catch him for all the bad things he did. They finally found a way to arrest him, not for murder or selling illegal drinks, but for not paying his taxes!
He was sent to prison, and his powerful reign over Chicago came to an end. He spent the last few years of his life sick and died in 1947, a shadow of his former powerful self.
