Saffron

Imagine a flower so special that just a tiny part of it is worth more than gold! That's saffron! It comes from a beautiful purple flower called the saffron crocus.

Inside each flower are three little red threads, called stigmas. These threads are what we use as saffron spice. It takes a LOT of these tiny threads to make just a little bit of spice.

Saffron has a super long history, going back thousands of years! People in places like Greece and Iran were some of the first to discover how amazing saffron was. They used it to color their clothes, make perfumes, and add a special taste to their food.

It was so valuable that kings and queens wanted it. It traveled all around the world on ships and by land, becoming a treasure everywhere it went.

Saffron is like a superhero spice! It can turn your food a beautiful golden-yellow color, making dishes look super fancy. It also gives food a unique, slightly sweet, and earthy flavor that's hard to find anywhere else.

Chefs love it for making yummy rice dishes, delicious desserts, and even special drinks. It's also been used for a very long time to help people feel better, like a natural medicine.

Getting saffron is a lot of hard work! The saffron crocus flowers only bloom for a few weeks each year. When they do, people have to carefully pick the flowers by hand, usually in the early morning. Then, they gently pluck out those three tiny red threads from each flower. It takes about 75,000 flowers to get just one pound of saffron! That's why it's so expensive and precious.
