Ryk Neethling

Imagine a super-fast fish, but it's a person! That's Ryk Neethling. He was born in a place called Bloemfontein in South Africa a long, long time ago, on November 17, 1977. Ryk loved swimming so much that he became one of the best swimmers in the whole world! He swam in four Olympic Games, which are like the biggest sports party for countries all over the globe. He even won a shiny gold medal!

When Ryk was a kid, he went to a school called Grey College. He was already a super swimmer back then! He broke a swimming record that had been held for many years.

Think of it like breaking a video game high score that no one could beat. By the time he was about 18, he was winning big swimming races in South Africa. This amazing talent helped him get chosen to swim for his country in the 1996 Olympics!

Ryk Neethling is famous for winning a gold medal at the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens. He was part of a relay team, which means he swam with three other super-fast swimmers. Together, they were the fastest in the world in the 4x100 freestyle race! He also broke world records, which means he swam faster than anyone ever had before. He's one of South Africa's most amazing swimmers ever!

After becoming a swimming champion, Ryk didn't stop being awesome. He went to a big university in America called the University of Arizona to keep swimming and learning. Later, he used his swimming knowledge to help others. He helped start swimming schools so other kids could learn to swim fast and safely. He also worked with a foundation that helps kids learn to swim and be safe in the water.
