KD's World Tour - Ross Island

Key Facts
Meet the Land of Fire and Ice!
Ross Island is a super cool island way, way down at the bottom of the world, in a place called Antarctica. It’s not like other islands you know because it’s made entirely of volcanoes! Two big ones are Mount Erebus, which is still puffing out smoke, and Mount Terror, which is sleeping.
The island is really big, about as wide as driving from your house to your best friend's house and back again! It’s covered in ice and snow, making it a land of fire and ice.
Where the Brave Explorers Lived!
Long ago, brave explorers came to Ross Island to be the first to reach the South Pole. They built little wooden huts to stay warm. You can still see these huts today! They are like time capsules, showing us how people lived over 100 years ago. It’s amazing to think they survived in such a cold and icy place without all the modern things we have.
Scientists' Snowy Home!
Today, Ross Island is a busy place for scientists from all over the world. They have big bases, like towns, where they study the weather, the ice, and animals like penguins and seals. The biggest town is called McMurdo. It’s so big it’s the largest place where people live in all of Antarctica! They even have airports to fly in and out.
A Special Island for Science
Ross Island is special because it’s a perfect spot for science. Scientists study the active volcano, the freezing ocean, and the amazing animals that live there. They also use it as a starting point to travel to other parts of Antarctica, even all the way to the South Pole! It’s like a super important science station for the whole planet.
