Key Facts
Who's That Red-Chested Friend?
Robins are small, bouncy birds that love to hop around in gardens and parks. They are famous for their bright orange-red chests, which look like they’re wearing a cozy sweater! There are actually many different kinds of robins all over the world, but the one most people think of is the American Robin. They are super common and easy to spot, making them a favorite bird for many people.
Robin's Super Snack Time!
What’s for dinner? Robins are omnivores, which means they eat both plants and animals! Their favorite food is juicy earthworms, which they find by listening for them wiggling underground. They also munch on berries and insects. Imagine a robin being as tall as your hand, and then picture it pecking at a worm that’s almost as long as its own body! That’s a big meal for a little bird.
Where Do Robins Build Their Nests?
Robins build their homes in trees, bushes, and sometimes even on buildings! They make cozy nests out of mud, grass, and twigs. A mama robin usually lays about 3 to 5 light blue eggs. These eggs are about the size of a large grape. The baby robins, called chicks, hatch after about two weeks and are fed by both parents until they are big enough to fly away and start their own adventures.
Singing a Happy Tune!
Robins are known for their beautiful singing. They sing to tell other robins to stay away from their territory and to attract a mate. Their song sounds like a cheerful, rolling melody. It’s often one of the first bird songs you hear in the morning, especially in springtime. It’s like they are saying, 'Good morning, world! Isn't it a lovely day!'
