Robert Nanteuil

Robert Nanteuil was a super-talented artist who lived a long, long time ago in France. He was like a magician with his tools! He didn't paint with brushes like you might see in a museum.

Instead, he was a special kind of artist called an engraver. This means he made beautiful pictures by carving them onto metal plates. Then, he would use ink to print these pictures onto paper, making copies that looked just like the original drawing!

Robert Nanteuil was so good at his job that he became the official artist for the King of France, Louis XIV! Imagine drawing portraits of the most important people in the whole country. His pictures were so lifelike, they were like looking at a photograph, but made by hand!

He drew kings, queens, and other fancy people. His art was very important because it helped people remember what these important figures looked like.

Robert Nanteuil used a special technique called engraving. First, he would draw a picture, usually of a person's face, very carefully. Then, he would use sharp tools to scratch lines onto a metal plate, like a copper plate.

These scratches would hold the ink. He would cover the plate with ink, and then wipe most of it off, leaving ink only in the scratched lines. When he pressed paper onto the plate, the ink transferred, creating a detailed image.

It was a lot of hard work!
