Imagine a boy named Robert who loved looking up at the night sky. He was born a long, long time ago, in 1935! Robert was super smart and loved science. He dreamed of flying higher than any airplane, all the way to space! He studied really hard in school, especially math and science, because he knew that was the ticket to his dreams.
Zooming into Space!
Robert became a pilot in the Air Force. He was so good at flying that he got a special job. He was chosen to be an astronaut! This means he was training to go into space. He was the very first African-American person to be picked for this amazing job. He was ready to explore the universe!
A True Pioneer!
Robert Lawrence was a real trailblazer. He broke down barriers and showed everyone that anyone, no matter their skin color, could reach for the stars. He proved that with hard work and determination, dreams can come true. His courage paved the way for many other astronauts who came after him.
His Amazing Mission
Robert was training for a super secret mission called the Manned Orbiting Laboratory. He was learning how to live and work in space. Sadly, he never got to go to space because he passed away before his mission. But his legacy as the first Black astronaut trainee lives on forever!
