Key Facts

Discovered By
Isaac Newton. He wrote about forces in 1687.
What It Does
Changes how fast something is moving or its direction, or changes its shape.
How We Measure It
In units called Newtons (N).
Fun Fact
A force can be a push or a pull.

What's a Force Anyway?

Imagine you're playing with toys. When you push a car, you're using a force! When you pull a wagon, that's a force too. A force is just a push or a pull that can make something move, stop, or change its shape. It's like a secret superpower that makes things happen all around you, even when you can't see it!

Who Figured Out Forces?

A super-smart scientist named Isaac Newton, who lived a long, long time ago, was one of the first people to really study forces. He watched apples fall from trees and planets move in the sky. He figured out that these movements were caused by invisible forces. He wrote down his amazing ideas about how forces work, and we still use them today!

Why Forces Are Super Important!

Forces are why you don't float off into space! The Earth's gravity, a type of force, pulls you down. Forces help you walk, run, and jump. When you kick a soccer ball, your foot applies a force to make it fly. Forces are also what keep the Moon going around the Earth and the Earth going around the Sun. They make the world go 'round!

Forces in Action!

Think about playing tug-of-war. You pull on the rope, and the other team pulls back. That's a force! When you rub your hands together really fast, they get warm because of friction, which is a force that slows things down. Even when you squeeze a sponge, you're using a force to change its shape. Forces are everywhere, making everything happen!
