An Island Shaped Like an Egg!

Imagine an island floating in the big blue ocean, not too far from the city of Cape Town in South Africa. That's Robben Island! It's shaped a bit like an egg and is about as long as three football fields. The island is super flat, barely sticking out of the water, like a sleepy turtle's back. It's a special home for many animals, including playful seals that gave the island its name!

A Place with a Secret Past

Long, long ago, Robben Island wasn't a happy place. It was used as a prison for many years. People who were treated unfairly were sent there. One very important person, Nelson Mandela, spent 18 years of his life locked up on this island. He was a brave leader who wanted everyone to be treated equally. Even though it was a prison, it's now a place where we remember important stories.

Home to Wriggly Seals!

Guess what? The island's name, Robben Island, comes from the Dutch word for seals, 'robben'! So, it's like 'Seal Island'. You can imagine lots of slippery, barking seals swimming around the shores. These amazing sea creatures love to play in the water and sunbathe on the rocks. They are a big part of what makes this island so special and wild.

A Super Important Island Today

Today, Robben Island is a very special place that people want to protect. It's like a treasure that everyone in South Africa and around the world wants to keep safe. It's a reminder of how things have changed and how important it is to be fair to everyone. It's also a natural home for lots of animals, making it a wonderful place to learn and explore!
