Republican marches

Imagine a parade so big, it filled streets for miles and miles! That’s what the Republican marches were like. In January 2015, millions of people in France walked together. They were sad about some terrible events, but they also wanted to show everyone how important it is to be able to say what you think and share your ideas. It was like a giant, peaceful hug for freedom of speech!

These marches happened after some very sad and scary things took place in France. People felt it was important to come together and show they cared. It was the biggest time people had gathered like this in France since the end of World War II, a very long time ago! It shows that when people care about something, they can make a really big statement by walking together.

In the big city of Paris, it was like a sea of people! So many folks showed up that they needed three whole streets just for the march. It’s estimated that up to 2 million people walked in Paris alone! That’s more people than live in some countries! Even leaders from all over the world came to join, showing how important this message of freedom was to everyone.

It wasn't just Paris that had these amazing marches. Lots of other cities in France, like Lyon and Marseille, had huge crowds too! Imagine a city with 100,000 people marching – that’s like almost everyone in your whole town walking together! People even marched in other countries like Germany and Canada. It was a worldwide message that freedom of speech matters to everyone.
