Where is Red River?

The Red River is a special place in North America, kind of like a big river that flows through a land called Rupert's Land. This land was huge, much bigger than any playground you've ever seen! It was a place with wide-open spaces, perfect for farming and living.

The Red River Colony was a community along this river, where people lived and worked together. It's now part of a Canadian province called Manitoba.

A Big Change Happens!

Once upon a time, a big company called the Hudson's Bay Company owned this land. But then, the new country of Canada decided it wanted to buy it! This made the people living there, especially the Métis people who had French and Indigenous roots, a little worried.

They didn't want their way of life to change without them having a say. So, they decided to form their own temporary government to talk to Canada.

Meeting Louis Riel!

A brave leader named Louis Riel helped the Métis people. He was very smart and wanted to make sure everyone's rights were protected. He and his followers stopped the new governor from Canada from coming into their land.

They wanted to make sure that the land was transferred to Canada in a way that was fair to everyone who already lived there. Riel even helped create a new province called Manitoba!

Making a New Province

After lots of talking and some disagreements, Canada and the people of Red River came to an agreement. They created the province of Manitoba, which is like a new state in Canada. This new province made sure that French schools were available for Métis children and that their Catholic religion was respected. It was a big step in making sure everyone's voice was heard.
