Meet the Ramapo Mountains!

Imagine a long, bumpy line of green hills stretching across New Jersey and New York. These are the Ramapo Mountains! They are covered in trees and are part of a much bigger mountain family called the Appalachian Mountains. Some parts of these mountains are as tall as a very tall building, and others are even taller! They are a beautiful place to explore.

What's it Like to Hike Here?

Lots of people love to hike in the Ramapo Mountains. There are many trails, like little paths through the forest. Some of these trails are even part of a super long trail called the Appalachian Trail, which goes for thousands of miles! These mountains have been around for a super, super long time, even before dinosaurs! They are made of very old rocks.

Why Are They Special?

The Ramapo Mountains are special because they are home to many plants and animals. They also help divide two big areas called counties in New York. A long, long time ago, it was so tricky to get over these mountains that one county even decided to become its own place! It shows how important these mountains are.

Fun Mountain Facts!

Did you know the Ramapo Mountains are named after a giant crack in the Earth called the Ramapo Fault? This fault is like a huge scar that separates different kinds of land. The rocks here are super old, some are as old as 1.3 billion years! That's older than your grandparents, and their grandparents, and many, many more!
