Key Facts
A Day for Leaders!
Imagine a day just for the super-important people who were in charge of the whole United States! That's Presidents' Day! It happens every year on the third Monday in February.
It's a day to remember all the presidents, but it started to celebrate George Washington, the very first one. He was like the captain of a ship, guiding America when it was brand new. He even helped win a big war and helped make the rules for our country!
When Did This Start?
This special day wasn't always on the third Monday. For a long time, it was on February 22nd, George Washington's actual birthday. But then, to give people a nice long weekend, they moved it!
Now, it can fall between February 15th and February 21st. It's like moving your birthday party to a Saturday so more friends can come. This change also made it easier to celebrate other presidents, like Abraham Lincoln, who was born on February 12th.
Why We Remember Them!
Presidents' Day is super important because it reminds us of the people who made big decisions for our country. George Washington helped America become a free country. Abraham Lincoln was president during a very tough time called the Civil War and helped end slavery.
These leaders had to be brave and smart, and thinking about them helps us understand how our country works and how important it is to have good leaders.
More Than Just One Guy!
Even though it started for George Washington, many people now think of Presidents' Day as a time to honor ALL the presidents. Some states even officially celebrate Washington and Abraham Lincoln together because they were both so important. It's like having a party for two best friends instead of just one!
It's a chance to learn about all the different leaders and what they did to help America grow.
