Pope Boniface VIII: The Pope Who Loved Power!

Once upon a time, there was a very important person named Pope Boniface VIII. He was the leader of the Catholic Church, which meant lots of people listened to him! He was born a long, long time ago, around the year 1230.

That's even before castles were as common as they are today! He lived in Italy and became Pope in 1294. Being Pope was like being the most important person in a giant, worldwide club.

He wore fancy robes and lived in a big palace.

Pope Boniface VIII was known for trying to be the boss of everyone, even kings and queens! He believed the Pope should have the most power. He wrote special letters called 'bulls' that told people what to do.

One famous one was called 'Unam Sanctam,' which basically said everyone had to obey the Pope to be saved. He also started the first-ever Catholic 'Jubilee' year in 1300. This was a special time when people could get their sins forgiven if they visited Rome.

It brought tons of visitors!

Sometimes, being in charge means you have disagreements. Pope Boniface VIII had a big fight with the King of France, Philip IV. The King didn't think the Pope should tell him what to do, especially about taxes.

The Pope got really angry and tried to punish the King. But the King's people were also very powerful and didn't like the Pope's rules. This fight showed that even the Pope wasn't always able to get his way with strong rulers.

Pope Boniface VIII is remembered because he believed the Pope's power was super important. He tried to make the Church the most powerful thing in the world. The Jubilee year he started became a tradition that still happens today, bringing people to Rome every 25 years!

Even though he had arguments, his actions helped shape how the Church and countries interacted for many, many years. He was a key player in a very interesting time in history.
