At first I thought it was a floating log, but lo and behold, it was a Platypus! I snapped this while walking on the suspension bridge over the swift flowing Yarra river near the Odessy House

Meet the Wacky Platypus!

The platypus is a super special animal that looks like it’s made from parts of other animals! It has a bill like a duck, a tail like a beaver, and webbed feet like an otter. But guess what? It’s not a bird or a reptile, it’s a mammal! This means it has fur and the mommies feed their babies milk. They are so unique that scientists were amazed when they first saw one!

Where Do These Oddballs Live?

Platypuses call the eastern part of Australia home, from the cool mountains to the warmer coasts. They love to live near rivers, streams, and lakes. They dig cozy burrows in the riverbanks to sleep and raise their babies. These burrows have underwater entrances so they can sneak in and out without being seen by other animals. They are shy creatures and prefer to stay hidden!

What's on the Platypus Menu?

Platypuses are super hunters when they dive underwater! They eat yummy things like insect larvae, shrimp, and worms. They don't have teeth to chew their food, so they use their gizzards, which are like little pouches in their stomachs, to grind up their meals. They also use their sensitive bills to feel for food in the muddy river bottoms. They are like underwater detectives!

Platypus Superpowers!

Did you know male platypuses have a secret weapon? They have a sharp spur on their hind legs that can deliver a venomous sting! It’s not strong enough to hurt humans badly, but it can really hurt other platypuses or animals that try to bother them.

They also have a special sense in their bill that can detect tiny electrical signals from their prey, helping them find food even in dark, murky water!
