Meet the Giant Floating City!

Piper Alpha was like a super-duper big playground, but instead of swings and slides, it had pipes and machines! It floated way out in the ocean, far from land, where it helped bring up oil and gas from deep under the sea. Think of it as a giant metal island that people lived and worked on, all to get important stuff for our cars and homes.

It was so big, it was like a whole town floating on the water!

Where Did It Come From?

This giant floating city started its job a long, long time ago, in 1976. At first, it was just for oil, but then they made it even bigger and better to also get gas. It was built to be a super important place for getting energy.

It was located far away from Scotland, in a place called the North Sea, where the water can be very wavy and wild. It was a busy place with lots of people working there every day.

Why It Was So Important!

Piper Alpha was like a superhero for getting energy! It was so good at its job that it made about one-tenth of all the oil and gas that came from the North Sea. That's a LOT! It was the biggest oil producer in the whole world for a while. This meant it was helping power lots of things we use every day, like lights and cars. It was a really big deal for getting energy to people.

A Sad Day Far From Home

Sadly, one night in 1988, something very dangerous happened. There was a big explosion, and the giant floating city started to break apart. It was a very sad and scary time.

Many brave people who worked there lost their lives. It was a terrible accident that showed how important it is to be super careful when working with powerful things like oil and gas. Now, there's a special place in a park to remember everyone.
