When Everyone Held Their Breath!

Imagine you're at recess, and everyone is lined up, ready to play, but then the bell rings and you all just stand there! That's a bit like the Phoney War. It happened after World War II started in 1939.

Countries like Britain and France said they were at war with Germany, but for about eight months, hardly anything happened on the big battlefields in Europe. It was like a very long pause button was pressed!

What Were They Doing Instead?

Even though soldiers weren't fighting big battles, the grown-ups were still busy! They were trying to stop Germany in other ways. They used ships to block Germany from getting supplies, like a giant blockade.

They also made big plans for what they would do later. Some ideas were to help countries far away, like Norway, or even to stop Germany from getting important things like iron ore, which is used to make metal.

A Few Tiny Sparkles!

Sometimes, there were little bits of action. The French army marched into a small part of Germany called the Saar district, but they didn't stay long. Also, a country called Finland was attacked by Russia, and Britain and France talked about helping Finland.

But by the time they were ready, the fighting in Finland was already over! It was a bit like getting your superhero costume ready after the villain has already left.

The Big Surprise!

The quiet time ended with a HUGE surprise! In May 1940, Germany suddenly attacked France and other countries. At the same time, a new leader named Winston Churchill became the Prime Minister of Britain. This was when the real, big fighting of World War II truly began. The Phoney War was over, and everyone knew the world had changed very quickly!
