Key Facts
Why Did They Start Fighting?
A super big country called the Soviet Union wanted Finland to give them some land near a big city called Leningrad. They said it was for safety, like making sure your toys are in a safe box. But Finland said no!
They wanted to keep their home. So, the Soviet Union decided to invade Finland, which means they sent their army in. This happened a long, long time ago, right after another big war started in the world.
Brrr! It Was Freezing!
The war happened in the winter, and boy, was it cold! The temperature dropped to a super chilly -43 degrees Celsius. That's colder than the coldest day you've ever felt! The Finnish soldiers were amazing at fighting in the snow. They used skis to zoom around and hid in the white snow, surprising the Soviet soldiers. It was like a game of hide-and-seek, but with real soldiers!
Finland's Amazing Courage!
Even though the Soviet Union had way more soldiers and tanks, Finland fought back with all their might! They were like a tiny but super brave superhero. They defended their country for over two months, making the giant Soviet army lose lots of soldiers and tanks.
The world watched and was amazed by Finland's courage. They even got kicked out of a club called the League of Nations for starting the fight!
How Did It End?
After a tough fight, both sides agreed to stop. Finland had to give up some land, about 9% of their country, but they kept their freedom! The Soviet Union got the land they wanted, but they lost a lot of soldiers and looked a bit silly because they had so much trouble beating a small country. Finland became famous for being super brave and strong.
