Who Was This Sea Explorer?

Imagine a time long ago when ships were made of wood and sailed by the wind! Paulo da Gama was a real explorer from Portugal, a country far across the ocean. He was born around the year 1465, which is a super long time ago! Paulo was the older brother of another famous explorer, Vasco da Gama. They were like a super team, exploring new places together.

Sailing to Faraway Lands!

Paulo da Gama was part of a very important trip, the first time ships from Europe sailed all the way to India! He was in charge of a ship called the São Rafael. Think of it like being the captain of a big boat. This journey was super long and exciting, filled with adventures on the big, blue ocean. They saw amazing new sights and met different people.

A Sad Farewell at Sea

Sadly, during the trip back home, Paulo got very sick. His brother Vasco da Gama was very worried. Vasco brought Paulo to a beautiful island called Terceira, which is part of the Azores islands. Vasco stayed with his brother until Paulo sadly passed away in June or July of 1499. It shows how much brothers can care for each other, even during tough times.

Remembering Paulo da Gama

Even though Paulo da Gama is no longer with us, we remember him because he was a brave explorer who helped discover new routes to faraway lands. He is buried on Terceira Island, in a special place called the monastery of São Francisco. His story is part of the amazing history of exploration, showing how people used to travel the world in ships!
