Key Facts
Where Was This Giant Landmass?
Pangaea was like Earth's biggest playground, all the land stuck together! It wasn't in one spot like today's continents. Instead, it stretched all the way from the chilly North Pole to the frosty South Pole. It was so big that it was surrounded by one giant ocean called Panthalassa. Think of it like a giant cookie with a huge ocean of milk all around it!
When Did Pangaea Roam?
This super-continent wasn't around when dinosaurs were stomping, but it was there before them! Pangaea started forming about 335 million years ago. That's way, way, WAY before your grandparents' grandparents were even a tiny thought! It stayed together for a super long time, but then, about 200 million years ago, it started to break apart, like a puzzle coming undone.
What Was It Like?
Pangaea was a C-shaped giant! Most of its land was in the middle of the Earth, between the top and bottom poles. It had dry, desert-like places because the middle was far from the ocean. Imagine a giant island with a huge, salty sea all around it. It was the only supercontinent that scientists have been able to put back together like a giant jigsaw puzzle!
Why Should We Care About Old Land?
Even though Pangaea broke up, it's super important! The way it broke apart is why we have the continents we have today, like North America and Africa. It helps scientists understand how our planet Earth has changed over millions of years. It's like looking at old photos to see how your family has grown and changed!
