Where is This Amazing Place?

Owens Valley is a super long, skinny valley in California, like a giant playground stretched out! On one side, you have the Sierra Nevada mountains, which are SO tall they reach over 14,000 feet. That's taller than a whole bunch of giraffes stacked on top of each other!

On the other side are the White Mountains and Inyo Mountains. The valley floor is about 4,000 feet high, making it the deepest valley in the United States. It's a very dry place, often called the 'Land of Little Rain' because the tall mountains block the rain clouds.

A River That Disappeared!

There used to be a big lake called Owens Lake at the southern end of the valley. It was filled with water from the Owens River. But guess what?

A big city called Los Angeles needed water, so they built a super long pipe, called an aqueduct, to take most of the river's water away. This made Owens Lake almost completely dry by 1926! It's a bit like if someone took all the water out of your bathtub.

This story is so famous, it was even part of a movie called Chinatown!

Tiny Towns and Big Roads

Even though it's a big valley, only about 25,000 people live there. They live in small towns like Bishop, Lone Pine, Independence, and Big Pine. The main road that goes through the valley is called U.S.

Route 395. It's like the main street for the whole valley! Imagine driving for a long time and seeing amazing mountains and wide-open spaces.

The valley is split between two deserts: the Great Basin Desert and the Mojave Desert, which means it can get pretty hot!

What's So Special About It?

Owens Valley is special because it shows us how important water is. It's also a place with incredible nature. The mountains are so high they have snow on top even in the summer!

The valley floor is a desert, but it's surrounded by these giant, rocky peaks. It's a place where you can see extreme differences between dry desert land and snowy mountains. It's a reminder that our planet has many different kinds of places, and we need to take care of them.
