Ottoman frigate Ertuğrul

The Ertuğrul was a huge sailing ship, like a floating castle, built a super long time ago in 1863. It belonged to the Ottoman Navy, which was like the navy for a big empire. This ship was made of wood and had many sails to catch the wind. It was a frigate, which is a type of warship, but the Ertuğrul was also used for friendly visits to faraway places.

The Ertuğrul went on a very special trip all the way to Japan in 1890. It was a goodwill voyage, meaning it was like a friendly visit to make friends with people in Japan. The ship was filled with sailors and officers, all working together. They sailed across vast oceans, which is like traveling from one side of the world to the other!

On its way home from Japan, the Ertuğrul ran into a terrible typhoon, which is a giant, swirling storm with super strong winds and huge waves. The storm pushed the ship towards the coast of Japan. Sadly, the ship crashed into sharp rocks hidden underwater and sank. It was a very sad day, and many brave sailors were lost.

Even though the Ertuğrul sank, something amazing happened. Only a few sailors survived, and the kind people of Japan helped them. They were sent back home on other ships. This sad event actually helped make a strong friendship between Japan and Turkey that lasts even today! It shows how kindness can come from difficult times.
