The Ordovician Adventure!
Key Facts
Welcome to the Ordovician!
Long, long ago, way before dinosaurs, there was a time called the Ordovician period. It lasted for a super long time, about 41 million years! That’s longer than you can even imagine.
During this time, the oceans were filled with amazing and weird creatures. Think of lots of squishy, wiggly, and spiky things living in the sea. It was a busy time for life on Earth, with new kinds of animals showing up all the time.
When the Earth Got Rocked!
Guess what? During the Ordovician, Earth got hit by meteorites way more often than it does today! About 100 times more! Imagine if rocks were falling from the sky every day. Scientists think maybe there was a giant ring of space stuff around Earth back then, like Saturn’s rings, but made of rocks. This might have caused all those extra space rocks to fall down. It was a wild time in space!
Sea Monsters and First Plants!
The oceans were the main place for life. You’d find lots of shell-covered animals like snails and clams, and also creepy-crawly sea bugs. Some of these bugs might have even started crawling onto land!
And get this, the very first plants that lived on land appeared during the Ordovician. So, it wasn't just water creatures; life was starting to explore new places. Fish were also getting smarter and evolving.
A Time of Big Changes
The Ordovician period was a time of big changes. Life got much more diverse, meaning there were many more different kinds of plants and animals. It was like a giant party for life on Earth! But, sadly, at the very end of this period, many of these amazing creatures disappeared. This is called an extinction event. It shows that even in exciting times, things can change a lot.
