Key Facts
Where the World Gets a Little Colder!
Nuuk is the capital city of Greenland, a giant island way up north! It's like the boss city of Greenland. It sits right on the edge of a big, cold ocean called the Labrador Sea. Imagine standing on a pointy piece of land sticking out into the water. That's where Nuuk is! It's so far north that it's the northernmost capital city in the whole world, even farther north than some places in Iceland!
A City Built on Hope!
A long, long time ago, in 1728, a brave explorer named Hans Egede came to Greenland. He wanted to start a new town. He found a place where Inuit people already lived and decided to build his town there. He called it Godthaab, which means 'Good Hope' in Danish. But the Greenlandic people called their home Nuuk, which means 'cape' because of its shape. Now, everyone calls it Nuuk!
Living in the Land of the Midnight Sun!
Nuuk is a special place. In the summer, the sun stays up all night, like a never-ending daytime! In the winter, it gets dark early, but that's when you might see the amazing Northern Lights painting the sky with green and purple colors. It's a small city, with about as many people as a big school, but it's the most important city in Greenland for jobs and fun things to do.
Greenland's Big Boss City!
Nuuk is the main city in Greenland. It's where the leaders of Greenland make important decisions. Lots of people come to Nuuk to work in different jobs, like in offices or shops. It's also where kids go to school and learn new things. Even though it's far away and cold, Nuuk is a busy and exciting place for the people who live there.
