Nevado Sajama

Imagine a super-duper tall mountain that's actually a sleeping volcano! That's Nevado Sajama. It's the highest point in all of Bolivia, a country in South America.

This giant is so big, it's like a whole mountain range all by itself. It's covered in a sparkly ice cap, like a giant ice cream cone on top! It's located in a special place called Sajama National Park, where amazing nature is protected.

Nevado Sajama used to be a very active volcano, but now it's taking a very long nap. Scientists think it might have last woken up a super long time ago, maybe even before dinosaurs were around! It's a special kind of volcano called a composite volcano, which means it's built up from many layers of lava and ash. It's like a giant cake made of rock that's been baking for ages!

Even though Nevado Sajama is super tall and cold, amazing trees called Polylepis tarapacana grow on its sides. These trees are like little adventurers, climbing up to an amazing height of 5,000 meters (that's over 16,000 feet!). That's taller than many, many school buses stacked on top of each other! They are some of the highest trees in the whole world, showing how tough nature can be.

Nevado Sajama is part of Sajama National Park, which is like a giant, protected playground for animals and plants. Being the highest mountain means it has a very special climate. It's cold and windy up high, but this unique home allows special plants and maybe even animals to live there. The park helps keep this amazing mountain and its surroundings safe for everyone to learn about.
