Ice cap

Ice caps are like super-sized blankets made of ice that cover land. They are usually found on top of mountains. If an ice cap is smaller than a big country, like Texas, it's called an ice cap.

But if it's even bigger, like the size of a whole continent, it gets a different name: an ice sheet! These icy giants are made of snow that falls year after year and gets squished together until it turns into ice.

Ice caps are born from snow! When it snows a lot in one place, especially on high mountains, the snow doesn't always melt away in the summer. Over many, many years, more and more snow piles up. The weight of the new snow squishes the old snow down, turning it into thick, solid ice. It’s like making a giant snowball, but it takes thousands of years to grow this big!

These icy giants are like Earth's giant refrigerators! They help keep our planet cool. The white ice reflects sunlight back into space, which stops our planet from getting too hot. They also store a lot of fresh water as ice. When ice caps melt, the water flows into rivers and oceans, which is important for all living things, including us!

An ice cap is considered smaller than 19,000 square miles. That's still a lot of ice, but it's smaller than a really huge ice sheet, which covers more than 19,000 square miles. Think of it this way: an ice cap might be the size of a few big states, while an ice sheet could be as big as a whole continent! They are truly massive natural wonders.
