Netsilik: People of the Seal

Imagine living where it's super cold and snowy most of the time! That's where the Netsilik people live. They are a special group of Inuit who call the Kitikmeot Region in Canada their home. Their name, Netsilik, means 'people of the seal' because seals are very important to them. They live in places like Kugaaruk and Gjoa Haven, where the land meets the sea and ice.

The Netsilik are known for being super smart and resourceful. For a long time, they lived in ways that were very connected to nature. They learned how to hunt and survive in the cold Arctic. In the early 1900s, people from far away, like missionaries, came to meet them. It was one of the last times these groups met new people from the south.
