Imagine a boy who loved to talk and learn! That was Nathaniel P. Banks.
He grew up in a town where he worked in a mill, like a big factory with machines. But Nathaniel loved to debate and share his ideas. He was so good at it that people noticed him!
He started in a political team called the Democrats but then joined the Republicans because he believed everyone should be free. He became a very important person in government, even speaking in a place called the House of Representatives!
Speaker of the House: A Super Long Vote!
One time, Nathaniel P. Banks was chosen to be the Speaker of the House. This is a super important job, like being the captain of a team!
But getting him elected took a REALLY long time. They had to vote 133 times, which is more votes than there are days in half a year! It took them two whole months to decide.
Can you imagine voting for something for two months? That shows how much people were thinking about who should lead.
