Major Mukund Varadarajan's path to becoming a decorated officer began with a strong educational foundation and a deep-seated commitment to national service. Born on April 12, 1983, in Kozhikode, Kerala, he hailed from a Tamil family. After completing his undergraduate studies in 2004, Mukund made the pivotal decision to dedicate his life to the defense of India.

He enrolled in the prestigious Officers Training Academy (OTA) in Chennai, a rigorous institution renowned for shaping future military leaders. His successful completion of the OTA program led to his commissioning as a lieutenant in the Indian Army's Rajput Regiment in 2006. Leading his team in Qazipathri, Southern Kashmir, Mukund engaged Altaf Wani, who had assumed leadership of the terrorist network after Baba's demise and was responsible for the murder of electoral officers during the 2014 general elections. In the ensuing intense firefight, Major Varadarajan, alongside Sepoy Vikram Singh, displayed extraordinary bravery, neutralizing Wani and his two accomplices. This successful operation, however, came at the ultimate price, with both Major Varadarajan and Sepoy Singh making the supreme sacrifice in the line of duty.
