Mountain Meadows Massacre

Mountain Meadows is a beautiful, wide-open grassy place in southern Utah. It's like a big, green carpet in the desert, surrounded by hills. It's a peaceful spot, but a long, long time ago, something very sad happened there. Think of it as a big park where travelers used to stop to rest on their long journeys.

In 1857, a group of families, like your own, were traveling in big wagons called a wagon train. They were going all the way to California to find a new home. They had to travel through Utah. Along the way, they stopped at Mountain Meadows. But sadly, some people who lived in Utah at the time were scared of strangers, and they made a very bad choice.

Some people in Utah, who were part of a militia (like an army), and some Native Americans attacked the wagon train. It was a very scary time. The travelers tried to protect themselves, but they ran out of water and food. It's a story about a time when people didn't get along, and it ended very sadly for the families in the wagon train.

After the sad event, most of the grown-ups and older children were gone. Only the very youngest children, who were too little to understand, were saved. People took care of them. It's important to remember this story so we can learn to be kind and understanding to everyone, no matter where they come from.
