Mount Kilimanjaro
Key Facts
Meet the Giant Mountain!
Mount Kilimanjaro is a super-duper tall mountain in Africa, in a country called Tanzania. It's like a giant sleeping volcano! It's the tallest mountain on the whole continent and the tallest mountain in the world that stands all by itself. It's so high, its peak is almost 6,000 meters (that's like 19,000 feet!) above the sea. That's way taller than any building you've ever seen!
A Home for People Long Ago
For a very, very long time, people called the Chagga lived on the sides of Mount Kilimanjaro. They had their own kingdoms, which were like little countries. They lived there until about 60 years ago. The name 'Kilimanjaro' might mean 'mountain of greatness' or 'unclimbable mountain.' It's so big, it's hard to believe someone could climb it!
Snow on a Tropical Mountain?
Even though Kilimanjaro is near the equator, where it's usually warm, its top has a big ice cap and glaciers! This is because it's so incredibly high up. Think of it like being in a super-cold freezer at the very top. Sadly, this ice is melting really fast, and scientists think it might all be gone in your lifetime!
Climbing to the Clouds!
Lots of people love to climb Mount Kilimanjaro. It's not super tricky to climb, but it's very, very high. When you get that high, the air gets thin, and it can make you feel sick if you go too fast. There are seven different paths to reach the very top, called Uhuru Peak. It's an amazing adventure to reach the highest point in Africa!
