Mount Katahdin

Mount Katahdin is the tallest mountain in the whole state of Maine. It’s like a giant sleeping in the forest! It’s so high, it reaches 5,269 feet into the sky.

That's taller than 50 giraffes stacked on top of each other! This amazing mountain is made of hard rock called granite, which pushed up from deep inside the Earth a long, long time ago. It’s the star of Baxter State Park, a big, beautiful place for nature lovers.

Long before anyone built houses or schools nearby, Native American people called the Penobscot lived in this area. They looked up at this huge mountain and gave it a special name: Katahdin. This name means 'Great Mountain' in their language. It shows how important and special this mountain was to them. It’s been a landmark for thousands of years, guiding people and inspiring awe.

People love to hike and climb Mount Katahdin. It's the very end of a super long walking path called the Appalachian Trail, which starts all the way down in Georgia! Imagine walking for months to reach this giant peak.

The top of the mountain is like a tiny, special garden called alpine tundra. It has delicate plants that can only grow in cold, windy places, and some of them are very rare and need to be protected.

A long time ago, a governor named Percival Baxter really loved Mount Katahdin and the land around it. He wanted to make sure it stayed wild and beautiful forever. He used his own money, like saving up his allowance for years, to buy the mountain and the forests. He wanted to protect it for everyone to enjoy, and now it’s a special park thanks to him!
