Key Facts
Meet the Giant Stone People!
Have you ever seen a statue? Moai are super-duper big stone statues made by people called the Rapa Nui a long, long time ago on Easter Island. They look like people but have really, really big heads, almost half the size of their whole body! They don't have any legs, and they are made from just one giant piece of rock. Itβs like they are giant stone heads watching over the land.
How Did They Make These Giants?
Making a moai was a HUGE job! The Rapa Nui people used special stone tools to carve them out of a giant rock mountain called Rano Raraku. It was like chipping away at a giant stone cake! Then, they had to move these super heavy statues, some weighing as much as 90 school buses, all the way to the coast. How they moved them is still a bit of a mystery, but they probably rolled them on logs!
Why Did They Build Them?
These amazing statues were like the faces of important ancestors who had passed away. The Rapa Nui people believed these moai were like guardians watching over their families and their island. They would stand them up on special stone platforms called ahu, facing inland to watch over their villages. It was their way of remembering and honoring the people who came before them.
Easter Island's Amazing Secrets
When explorers first found Easter Island in 1722, all the moai were standing tall, looking out at the land. But later, they all fell down! Some people think it was because of fights between the tribes or maybe because of the new visitors. Today, scientists are still finding more moai buried in the ground, and we are learning more about these incredible stone giants and the people who built them.
